Unique Travel Experiences You Can't Afford to Miss
Highlights
La Palma's 2021 eruptions have attracted tourists eager to explore the transformed landscapes and experience volcanic activity.
The volcanic eruptions on the island of La Palma, which began on September 19, 2021, have dramatically reshaped the landscape and piqued the interest of travelers around the world. These transformative events not only altered the geography of the island but also drew attention to its unique geological features.
Teodoro Gonzalez Perez, a nurse from Tenerife, is among those who have come to experience this fascinating environment firsthand. Upon his recent visit, he noted, "It's like walking on the surface of a new planet," reflecting on the surreal yet alluring aspects of hiking through the lush pine forests that are now blanketed in black ash.
The aftermath of the eruption highlights the dual narrative surrounding this natural disaster. While it undoubtedly led to significant challenges for the island, including the loss of over 1,000 homes and the devastation of local agriculture, it has also put La Palma on the global map as a must-visit destination for those intrigued by volcanic activity.
In August of this year, hotel occupancy rates on La Palma soared to an impressive 90.9 percent, as domestic tourists flocked to witness the site's dramatic changes. Carlos Garcia Sicilia, vice president of ASHOTEL, remarked on the paradox of the situation, stating, "On one hand, the volcano has been a misfortune for the island's economy, but on the other, half the planet has now heard of La Palma."
The heightened interest in La Palma has been echoed by an influx of cruise ships and direct flights from mainland Spain and other European destinations. Ryanair, the budget airline, has even established its first base on the island, significantly increasing its connectivity to key urban areas.
Tour companies have capitalized on this trend, with offerings growing in frequency and diversity. For instance, Excursiones Jesus, based in Tenerife, expanded its operations to include three 11-hour tours per week, showcasing the island's volcanic landscape and the remnants of the eruption to eager tourists.
Despite the initial allure of La Palma as a volcanic tourism destination, experts suggest that the interest may wane over time, as seen in other locations like Hawaii and Iceland following their own volcanic eruptions. Jonas Perez of Isla Bonita Tours cautioned against the sustainability of this tourist spike, predicting that memories of the eruption will fade.
Nonetheless, the local government recognizes the crucial role of tourism in revitalizing the island's economy. It has made significant investments in promotional efforts, including the distribution of travel vouchers to Spaniards, aimed at encouraging visits to local hotels and restaurants.
In addition to tourism promotion, the authorities are working on restoring essential infrastructure, as many accommodations have been rendered uninhabitable due to the eruption. There are ongoing efforts to improve access to tourist sites and enhance the island’s appeal as a travel destination.
Ultimately, while the volcanic eruptions have transformed both the land and the tourism landscape of La Palma, their long-term impact remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that exploration and understanding of such geological phenomena offer travelers a rare opportunity, surely making La Palma a unique destination that should not be overlooked.
