Discover the Sacred Thangka Artistry of Tibet's Mengthang

The Mengthang school of painting, which originated in the 15th century, was established by Menla Dondrup Gyatso in Lhozhag County, situated within China's Xizang Autonomous Region. Over time, this unique school has become one of the foremost traditions in Tibetan Buddhist art, characterized by its vivid and intricate murals. These masterpieces can be found adorning the walls of the Great East Hall, the Great West Hall, and other sacred chambers of the illustrious Potala Palace.

Tsering Wangyal, a contemporary inheritor of the Mengthang tradition based in Sakya County, Shigatse, plays a pivotal role in continuing the legacy of this sacred art form. With great dedication, he trains apprentices, ensuring that the age-old techniques and spiritual significance embedded in Mengthang painting are preserved for future generations. Sakya County holds historical significance in the evolution of Mengthang, as its founder Menla Dondrup Gyatso once journeyed to various regions, including Sakya, to study under the esteemed master Dopa Tashi Gyeltsen.

By the 17th century, the lineage of Mengthang was further advanced by master painter Choying Gyatso, who blended the traditional methods with creative influences from central China. This fusion led to the establishment of what is referred to as the New Mengthang School, which retained the foundational principles of its predecessor while adapting to the evolving artistic landscape. The Mengthang school has not only survived but thrived thanks to the dedication and ingenuity of artists like Tsering Wangyal, his disciples, and other committed practitioners.
