Discovering the Depths of Academic History Exploration
Highlights
Fez's historic madrassas attract tourists and promote cultural heritage, enriching education and fostering tolerance and understanding.
Fez, Morocco's first capital, is renowned for its historic madrassas, which are captivating tourists and promoting the importance of cultural heritage. These centuries-old centers of education are undergoing revitalization to echo the original vision of their founders, fostering moderation in Islam and encouraging understanding among diverse communities.
The Bou Inania madrassa, a 14th-century structure nestled in the UNESCO-listed walled city, serves as a poignant example of this educational revival. Student Moaz Soueif describes the experience of studying there as living 'in the embrace of a venerable academic history,' underlining the significance of this historic institution.
Since 2017, the Moroccan government has been actively renovating six such madrassas, including Bou Inania, to help sustain the city’s heritage while simultaneously promoting tourism. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to preserving historical assets that define Fez’s unique identity.
About 40 students from Qarawiyyin University share the space at Bou Inania, which has long been regarded as a pivotal spiritual and educational hub, predating the European Renaissance. The atmosphere is enriching, adorned with intricate inscriptions and mosaics that attract not only students but also an influx of tourists eager to admire its architectural beauty.
Located just inside Bab Boujelloud, one of the main gateways to the Old City, the madrassa has become a significant landmark. Nearby, the renovated Cherratine and Attarine madrassas also draw many visitors, who often describe their experiences as spiritual and authentic, immersing themselves in Fez’s rich cultural tapestry.
Fez stands as a remarkable testament to a crucial period in Islamic civilization, particularly during the 13th and 14th centuries when its influence extended from Morocco to western China. This era marked a golden age, as the city regained its status as Morocco's capital after centuries of overshadowing by Marrakesh.
Venturing further down from Bou Inania, one can find the historic Qarawiyyin Mosque, founded in the 9th century. It became the heart of one of the oldest continually operating universities in the world, nurturing intellectual giants and shaping the landscape of education for centuries.
The university thrived during the 13th and 14th centuries, as highlighted by Fez University history Professor El-Haj Moussa Aouni. It was a beacon of knowledge alongside other prominent centers in the Maghreb region.
Alongside teaching Islamic studies, the madrassas of Fez offered instruction in various subjects including mathematics, medicine, and literature, enriching the academic landscape. The Qarawiyyin mosque features a courtyard designed for prayer and study, although tourists often take opportunities to capture its beauty during brief openings.
The faculties and libraries, including Qarawiyyin's which boasts approximately 4,000 manuscripts, reflect an intellectual legacy maintained through dedicated restoration efforts. As the rector Abdulfattah Boukachouf notes, it is a uniquely historic collection, underscoring the significance of preserving Fez’s architectural and scholarly treasures.
With new programs for postgraduate students at Qarawiyyin University focusing on the Quran and other subjects, there is a renewed commitment among students to embody the principles of tolerance exemplified by the great scholars of the past, as emphasized by Soueif.
Overall, the cultural and educational revival in Fez not only preserves its rich heritage but also nurtures a spirit of moderation that resonates far beyond its walls, addressing contemporary challenges through a lens of understanding and respect.
