In the first eight months of 2025, travel between mainland China and the ASEAN member states reached over 25.24 million trips, marking a notable increase of 11.2 percent compared to the same period last year. This surge reflects a growing trend in international travel between the regions.
According to data released by China's National Immigration Administration (NIA), from January to August 2025, the number of entries by Chinese visitors into ASEAN countries surpassed 14.5 million. This figure indicates a growth of 3.7 percent from the previous year, reinforcing the allure of Southeast Asia as a travel destination for mainland Chinese.
Additionally, the NIA reported that during the same time frame, inbound travel from ASEAN nations to China saw a remarkable increase of 27.5 percent, exceeding 10 million arrivals. A significant portion of these travelers benefited from visa-free entry policies.
The report from the NIA highlights the positive impact of relaxed visa regulations and improved travel connectivity between the regions. These developments have encouraged greater interaction and movement between Chinese and ASEAN tourists.
Furthermore, the NIA indicated that it intends to introduce additional policies aimed at bolstering cross-border travel. The focus will be on fostering exchanges between China and ASEAN nations while enhancing regional economic and trade collaborations.
This travel boom not only signifies a rebound in post-pandemic tourism but also serves to invigorate the socio-economic landscape of the region. The continued growth in the number of international travelers is expected to stimulate local economies and promote cultural exchanges.
As countries within ASEAN see increasing numbers of Chinese arrivals, tourism sectors are likely to benefit from the influx. Local businesses and hospitality industries are preparing to accommodate the growing demand for services from Chinese tourists.
The data underlines the importance of strong regional ties in facilitating travel and tourism. Enhanced connectivity and mutual cooperation can significantly contribute to the development of both the Chinese and ASEAN markets.
