In a significant move highlighting its commitment to digital advancement, China is set to phase out paper-based passenger train tickets beginning in October. China Railway Group has announced that digital invoices will become the standard method for all rail travel.

With this transition, travelers will no longer receive paper reimbursement vouchers. Instead, they will be able to request and download digital invoices for their journeys, as well as for any fees related to refunds or ticket changes.

Passengers have up to 180 days post-trip to request their digital invoices through several accessible methods, including the official 12306 online platform, ticket counters at railway stations, or self-service kiosks.

Recognizing that some passengers may have limited or no access to the internet, the railway authority has introduced supportive measures. These travelers will have the option to apply for digital invoices in person at train stations or through authorized third-party online services.

For added convenience, travelers can retrieve their invoices through various channels, including the 12306 platform, the income tax app, or via email. Additionally, they are permitted to request the reissuance of invoices up to three times within a 180-day timeframe in case of errors or required updates.

Although the transition to digital invoices signifies the end of paper tickets, passengers who prefer a physical record can still print their journey information notes at station counters and self-service machines. However, these notes are intended as travel reminders and cannot serve as tickets or reimbursement vouchers.

This initiative is not sudden; China initially announced its plans to retire paper tickets progressively in 2018. Since then, there have been considerable advancements in the railway system's digitization efforts.
